London calls itself a 24-hour city, but anyone who’s actually been hungry at 4am knows the truth: most of it is fast asleep. The pubs called last orders hours ago, the kitchens shut at 11pm, and your delivery apps are showing you the same three kebab shops. So what’s actually open at 4am in London?
The honest answer
Genuinely 24-hour options in central London are rare. You’ll find a handful of bagel shops in the East End, some casino restaurants if you’re a member, hotel room service if you’re a guest, and petrol station meal deals if you’re desperate. What almost none of them offer is a proper table, a full menu and someone to bring you a cocktail.
That’s the gap we’ve been filling since 1995. VQ opened on Fulham Road as London’s original 24-hour restaurant, and thirty years later we’re still doing what almost nobody else does: full table service, a complete menu and a licensed bar, every hour of every day.
What you can eat at 4am at VQ
Everything. That’s the point. The 4am menu is the same as the 4pm menu:
- A full English breakfast — sausage, bacon, eggs how you like them, beans, mushrooms and toast. The classic 4am order.
- Fluffy pancake stacks — arguably better at 4am than at brunch.
- Burgers and comfort food — a proper burger with proper chips, at a table, with cutlery.
- Cocktails and milkshakes — the bar runs all night (alcohol is served with a substantial meal in the small hours).
Who’s out at 4am?
After thirty years of night shifts we can tell you exactly who walks through the door: clubbers refuelling after Soho and South Ken nights out, shift workers coming off nights — nurses, cabbies, hospitality staff, jet-lagged travellers who’ve given up fighting it, students mid all-nighter, and the occasional celebrity hiding behind sunglasses. At 4am, everyone’s equal and everyone wants pancakes.

VQ Bloomsbury — 111A Great Russell Street, WC1B, by the British Museum. Open around the clock from Wednesday 9am to Monday 5am (Mon & Tues 7am–11pm).
Walk-ins are welcome at any hour — no booking needed at 4am, though you might be surprised how busy it gets. Note that between 11pm and 6am we operate an ID scanner on entry.
